Happy Child Abuse Prevention Month!

Welcome to Child Abuse Prevention Month! A study commissioned by Prevent Child Abuse America shows that only 27% of Americans believe they are engaged in prevention. Yet, that same study shows that
  • 80% of Americans reported donating goods, money or time to an organization supporting children and families
  • 70% reported volunteering with children through churches, schools and sports or academic clubs, and
  • 56% mentored a child in their family, neighborhood or community.

This message is one of hope, and we want you to help us pass it on! We’re encouraging everyone to “pass the pinwheel” to someone you know who is having a positive impact on children. It can be your child’s teacher, your spouse, your niece’s soccer coach or the local librarian. Keeping with the “Pass the Pinwheel” theme, we are going to be passing out pinwheels in eight cities this April. And we are so excited to be planting our first pinwheel gardens in Monroe and Shreveport!

On April 14, we are partnering with Lenell Melancon, author of “Tootles the Turtle Tells the Truth,” to offer Connect the Dots: From Prevention to Survival of Child Sexual Abuse. This free seminar will feature nationally known survivor, speaker and author Erin Merryn.

I hope you join us by attending one of our pinwheel events, by wearing blue on Friday, April 6, attending Connecting the Dots, by passing out pinwheels in your community or simply liking our posts on social media. Child Abuse Prevention Month is about coming together to raise our collective voice and celebrate the happy, healthy childhoods we know are possible for Louisiana’s children.
